Real-Life Decision Making

You work in a chemical lab that measures the levels of chemicals put into the air by various products. Today has been a hectic day. Finally, you have a chance to test a detergent for levels of benzene.

Benzene is a chemical widely used in industry. It is colorless and has a sweet odor. Benzene can cause drowsiness, dizziness and unconsciousness when inhaled.

To make sure that your analytical system is clean, you normally run a blank. That means putting in something that you know doesn't contain the substance you're testing for. If the instrument shows none of the substance, then when you test the sample, you know the levels are for that sample and nothing else.

Today, you're low on time. You'll save time if you just run the sample and rely on the blank that you ran yesterday.

What do you do?
