Additional Information

Swine specialists usually require a special training program. That program could range from 10 months to two years in duration. Grade 12 is the minimum entrance requirement.

Many courses combine hands-on experience with classroom learning. Co-op programs, distance education programs and internships are often available. In some areas, swine technician is a recognized trade. In those areas, apprenticeships can be arranged.

Former swine technician Deanne Miller says computer skills and a background in science, such as biology, are very important. A love of animals is also key.

In the U.S., the pork industry is becoming more vertically integrated. This means that one person will own the hogs from birth to the point where they are sold as food, says hog farmer John Penner. Only large operations can follow this model.

Many small hog producers are leaving the industry. But the total number of hogs being produced is growing. This will have an effect upon the work of the swine technician.

"It means that in time, swine technicians will be expected to manage other people. They will have more responsibilities and will be expected to have supervisory skills, budgeting skills and so on," explains Penner.
