Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You slow down to a crawl, allowing the other ship to pass.

This option would allow the other ship to pass before both ships enter the narrow part of the channel. But it could confuse the ship behind you and cause an accident. If your ship slows down too quickly, the other ship may collide with yours. It may not have enough time to adjust to your sudden drop in speed.

And technically, your ship has every right to maintain course and speed.

On the other hand, independent thinking is a prized commodity, especially if it prevents a major accident.

Marine navigators must be decisive in their work. The consequences of an error can be severe. "An error can be catastrophic," says former navigator John Mackie.
