Real-Life Decision Making

Marine engineers make critical decisions. Those who design and make ships must find ways to make them fast and affordable and safe. Those who repair and maintain them must make sure that they are in proper working order.

You are a marine engineer. You have been hired to oversee the retrofitting of a cargo ship with a new engine. The owner is an Australian shipping magnate who runs a fleet of 25 ships around the world.

He is known for being one of the wealthiest cargo shippers in the world. But he's also known for being stingy with his money when it comes to his ships.

Still, you know his business could be worth a lot to your career. With a fleet as large as his, you know he'll need at least two ships worked on every year. That alone would be nearly enough to keep you in business.

You try to meet his short schedule and stay within his tight budget. But as the deadline approaches, you realize that more must be done. In order for the ship to be seaworthy, another two weeks and $20,000 will have to be spent.

You call him to inform him of the news. He gets angry and demands that his captain be allowed to take his ship the next day.

What do you do?
