Additional Information

Educational requirements for indexers will vary with the type of indexing being done. Indexers in the academic arena may require a master's degree in a research-oriented academic discipline. A general back-of-the-book indexer may need no more than continuing education classes.

"Indexing requires a very specific mindset in terms of work habits," says indexer Stephanie Fysh. "Since it's mostly freelance work, it also requires that the indexer be able to take a chance -- sometimes the work comes in regularly, and sometimes it doesn't."
