Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Here's what you could tell Mr. Johnson:

"Actually, Mr. Johnson, I can suggest several ways to save money on heating bills. One easy thing you can do is replace your furnace filter twice a year -- in the spring and fall. This will improve furnace efficiency.

"Also, you should check your windows. They let in cold air if they're cracked. Even if none are cracked, you should putty older windows to reduce drafts. It's a good idea to weatherstrip all your windows, too. You should also weatherstrip doors and attic entrances.

"Another good idea is to check in your basement. If you find cracks and openings in your house's foundation, use caulking to fill them.

"A lot of money can be wasted heating your house when you're not home. You can save money if you install thermostats that automatically lower the temperature when you're not home.

"You can do a couple more things to keep the cold out and the heat in. You can insulate attics and walls. Also, you can install exterior storm windows.

"Those are some of the best ways to save money on heating bills. Do you have any other questions?"

Gas fitters need to be comfortable dealing with the public. A friendly demeanor and ability to explain things in simple terms are important qualities.

Gas fitters inform customers of what they're doing when they go to customers' homes. They also explain to customers how they can save money.

"You're in direct contact with the consumer so your communication skills have to be very strong," says gas fitter Keith Fagnan. "I use communication skills every day."
