Insider Info

Additional Information

Gas fitters must have some sort of apprenticeship training -- four to five years of on-the-job training and around 144 hours of related classroom instruction.

Applicants must be 18, in good physical condition and have a high school diploma or its equivalent.

A knowledge of math, blueprints and plumbing is very important, says gas fitter Doug Fitzgerald. "You'll always be working with numbers. And you should know how to read blueprints -- since you may be working from them -- and know about plumbing and different pressures."
