Insider Info

Joseph Dupris is a Lakota Indian. He says that some communities have experienced decades-long blanks in their history. There were no spiritual, political or cultural leaders, roles that elders have traditionally filled. But although the role of the elder has changed over time, they will always be necessary, he says.

Dupris says that the survival of many cultural traditions in which elders are central is largely due to university language programs, which combine the knowledge of elders and the expertise of linguists.

Ella Christie is an elder of the Cree Nation. She says that she does not receive financial compensation from the government for her work. "Only through my job," she says.

Earnings and employment information from the U.S. Department of Labor is not available for this field at this time.
