Additional Information

All public school teachers in the U.S. must be licensed. Licensing is not required for teachers in private schools. Licenses are usually granted by the state board of education.

Licensing requirements differ among states. However, a bachelor's degree and completion of an approved teacher training program is typical. Teachers wanting to make a specialty out of family and consumer sciences should major in that discipline.

Certification through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is available, but not compulsory. A nationally certified teacher may find it easier to find work in a different state, and may earn a higher income or be eligible for more senior positions.

Family and consumer sciences teacher training is available at many colleges and universities in the U.S.
