Additional Information

Get a solid education, learn to fly if it interests you and learn how airports work. Many airports prefer their managers to hold pilot's licenses, which are obtained through lengthy in-flight lessons and exams.

Most also want managers to have previous experience in some form of airport administration, from financial oversight to mechanical management.

Airport manager Larry Adams completed a degree in aeronautics and took as many airport management courses as possible.

Many universities offer general management courses that prepare you for the field. Some institutions offer courses specifically designed to prepare students for work in airport management.

According to Adams, most entry-level airport management positions are "eaten up by colleges that have aviation degrees and aviation management."

Adams explains that interns coming out of colleges and universities fill most of the job openings. "Most people stay and work themselves up," he says.
