Real-Life Decision Making

You're a geomatics engineer who designs maps for the government. You've been assigned to come up with a new design scheme for a series of 13,000 maps. The maps cover the entire U.S. land mass (figuratively speaking).

Map sheets always have unique alphanumeric labels. This label is in black ink and is used to find a particular map.

Of course, it is important that the label is easy to find and read. To make it stand out, you're considering making all the other text on the map purple. All place names will be in this strong, clear color. The clarity will help people read the maps, which will be densely packed with place names.

The problem is, map text has traditionally been black. You know the government doesn't like unconventional approaches. You'll have to persuade your supervisor and colleagues that it will work.

What do you do?
