Additional Information

George Ladas was a real estate agent before becoming a location manager for film and commercial producers. He says it is important to be familiar with all the popular spots in the city in which you are working.

"If you appear knowledgeable about the area, [producers and directors] feel relieved that they actually know what you're doing."

As far as formal training, the film business doesn't require any. People new to the area should check with a state film office about becoming an intern. The positions don't usually pay, but they provide exposure to the field, which can lead you into a job in scouting and managing, according to Ladas.

"You also have to network and know people," he says. "You have to let people know you're interested in this particular job and you're willing to help out and you want them to eventually hire you as an assistant when a big job comes their way."
