Additional Information

To work underwater, you need to get a commercial diver's license. This means you must complete a recognized commercial diving school program. It generally includes courses on all aspects of underwater construction. There are only about 12 schools in North America that offer commercial diving training.

While diving school will introduce divers to welding, special training in underwater welding also helps, says underwater welding instructor Jonathan Bennett.

"It's certainly most beneficial. If they don't have some sort of a ticket or qualification record, how can they confirm to their next employer that they actually do the job?"

Special training is not necessary -- you could work without it. But without it, you cannot do certain jobs.

"You could act as welder, but you would not be allowed to work on any code jobs such as a bridge structure or ship hull repair," Bennett says.
