Real-Life Communication

You're the chief of mechanics for a major construction firm that specializes in building and expanding airports in difficult locations, such as the mountains.

That means your company owns a lot of specialized equipment such as earth movers, rock crushers and graders, some of which can cost nearly $1 million.

So your boss likes to keep his eyes out for used equipment in good shape. And he occasionally calls on your expertise to help him out.

Now is one of those times. He sends you to a site where a portable rock crusher is being sold for $650,000. He asks you to look over the machine and provide him with a short report on its condition and value. Is the price worth it? A new rock crusher costs about $1.2 million.

Your Visit

  • The steel chassis of the machine is solid. Only surface rust is visible and the body should last for years to come.
  • It poured out smoke -- it's clear the powerful diesel motor that runs the crusher needs some work. A new head gasket would be required. That three-day job would cost about $2,000 in parts -- and could reveal more serious problems.
  • Several of the hydraulic connections leak. All 200 hydraulics fittings would need to be replaced, at a cost of $4,000. That's a two-day job.
  • The steel gears that crush the stone are in good shape and require no immediate work.

Now, give your boss a brief report. Remember, he doesn't need all the mechanical details. Your job is to use your expertise to make a recommendation. And make sure you consult the Construction Institute.
