Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You work out a compromise with your boss.

You fix the most crucial pieces of equipment. The boss agrees with you that the safety aspect is important, and you agree with him that any disruption to work needs to be kept to a minimum.

After talking it over for a while, you decide to work first on the loaders being used around the most people -- that is, the ones that could cause injury. Eventually, you'll work your way through the fleet, but in a way that ensures people remain safe.

Dealing with co-workers, bosses and customers is simply part of a day's work in the industry. Peter Congdon is the chief instructor of a heavy equipment program. "They must have good social skills," he says.
