Real-Life Math -- Solution

You're replacing an air pressure pump. You have to figure out the piston size that will provide the right amount of air pressure. First, figure out the total air pressure you need using the first formula:

Air Pressure = 1/2 pound of pressure per thousand pounds of gross vehicle weight (GVW)
Air pressure = 60 x 0.5 pound per thousand pounds
Air pressure = 30 (pounds of pressure needed)

Now use the second formula to get the piston size:

Size of air compressor piston = 30 x 0.6
Size of air compressor piston = 18

You want the third-largest compressor, the one with the 18-inch piston.

Are math skills really used in the field? "They sure are," says Alan Johnson. He is a campus administrator at a technical college.

"When high school students come to visit us, I try to emphasize some of the related areas that they need to concentrate on. One is math because they're doing measurements and they're doing calculations," says Johnson.
