More people in these occupations will use computers to present ideas to clients. This may lower the need for employees to draw and redraw designs.

But it will open doors for new graduates highly skilled in the use of computer-aided design and intelligent pattern engineering (IPE) systems.

Textile design does not require a four-year college degree. But many institutions offer master's degrees in textile design, which would be helpful in the competitive job market.

Many programs are also available at fashion design schools, which focus heavily on the textile field in the same way that trade schools focus on skilled trades.

Students may spend two to four years developing their art, illustration and color skills. They learn about various fibers, methods for weaving and knitting fibers into design patterns and the technology used to develop designs into finished products.
