Additional Information

A college degree often is not necessary to obtain a coaching position. However, value is placed on excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with others. While such skills may be honed outside of a college setting, most required courses leading to a degree help enhance these abilities.

At the college level, soccer coaches ordinarily are required to have a bachelor's degree in a sports-related field. They may get preferential treatment with a master's degree.

According to Robert Barry, a Hawaii-based soccer coach, certification is not required. Universities require that you meet their division rules and regulations.
