Additional Information

Greg Dowler-Coltman is the head of a theater school. He says a background in theater or a fine arts degree would make a person more competitive. "Perhaps 80 percent of schools look for drama teachers with this sort of background," he explains. "The other 20 percent do not insist on drama experience."

Tami Dowler-Coltman participates in hiring drama teachers when a position is available. "I look for someone with a background in theater. I look for passion. The students deserve a teacher who shares their enthusiasm for drama."

Public high school teachers must have a bachelor's degree and be licensed. Teachers in private schools are not required to be licensed.

Greg Dowler-Coltman emphasizes that drama teachers must be good team players. Often, they are required to work on team projects with other faculty members from music or arts departments. They are also required to communicate and cooperate with faculty, staff and administration in the school.
