Real-Life Math

In hostage situations, tactical officers may use tear gas to flush the hostage-taker out of the building. Too much tear gas can harm the hostages and the suspect; too little will have no effect at all.

To decide how much tear gas to use, tactical officers follow an established formula. For security reasons, this formula cannot be given out. So, we've come up with a question based on the kind of formula a tactical officer would use.

This is not the actual formula for tear gas use.In other words, don't try this at home!

Assume that tactical officers may use 1 gallon of tear gas for every 100 square feet of space in a building. If each tear gas canister contains 2 quarts of tear gas, and the building is approximately 400 square feet in size, how many tear gas canisters should be used?
