Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You correct the flaws without his knowledge and hope he finds the boat acceptable when you are finished.

You decide to protect your customer's ego by not mentioning the flaws in his designs. You give him a quote on what it will cost to build the boat. He accepts, and you get to work on the boat, implementing your changes to the design flaws without his knowledge.

When the boat is finished, you meet with your customer and explain to him that you found flaws in the designs as you were building the boat. You point the flaws out to him on the plans, and you show him plans you have drawn up to illustrate the changes.

He seems hesitant, so you take him to view the finished boat, which is ready for launch. When he sees the difference in the boat he has designed and the boat you have built, he becomes angry and refuses to pay for the boat.

The end result? You are left with a boat that you had no intention of building without a customer to purchase it.
