Additional Information

Most custom boatbuilders learn their trade through four-year apprenticeships with experienced boatbuilders. There are also schools that teach boat-building programs.

Some custom boatbuilders have degrees in other fields. Marvyn Hammatt is one of those people.

"I don't think formal education in this field is necessary, but all the general education you can get helps," he says. "I think hands-on work in the trade makes a better education for a boatbuilder, but it takes time."

Many boatyards and some individuals offer a limited number of apprenticeship programs, where students work in a hands-on environment. Working as an apprentice, you learn all aspects of custom boat-building, just as you would through a school.
