Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You decide to build the robot using cheaper parts.

You go back to the drawing board to design a cheaper robot. This is the real-life decision of Skip Carter, a robotics technologist in California.

"When you put anything in the water, you have to live with the very real possibility that it will never come back," says Carter. "It's supposed to return, but it just might not survive."

Because ocean robots are semi-expendable, it's very important that they are made reliable as cheaply as possible. If you're planning to produce more than one of these robots, it becomes important to think about the cost.

"Using an exotic gear thread may be fine for a research robot, but [it's] another matter altogether if it is to be mass produced," says Carter.
