Insider Info

Additional Information

Clinical research physicians must have a medical degree. Before entering medical school, you need to complete an undergraduate degree in a field of science.

Medical school is typically followed by three or more years of residency, which is supervised training in a medical specialty. Residency is sometimes followed by a fellowship, which involves additional supervised training in a subspecialty such as cardiology or oncology.

Some clinical research physicians have a PhD in addition to their medical degree.

"It's not common (to have a PhD), but it's becoming a little more common, especially in emergency medicine, if people do fellowships and combine their fellowships with didactic (classroom) training," says Dr. Rita K. Cydulka, a clinical research physician.

Extra Requirements

Medical scientists primarily conduct research and typically do not need licenses or certifications. However, those who practice medicine, such as by treating patients in clinical trials or in private practice, must be licensed as physicians or other healthcare practitioners.
