Real-Life Decision Making

Jewelry design is creative, artistic work. But it has its ups and downs. In other words, not everyone is going to love everything you make.

You are a jewelry designer with a small shop in a seaside town frequented by tourists. Most come in and browse for a while and then leave. Luckily, a lot of them do return to purchase items. Because your designs are unique, you have a policy limiting returns of all purchases after 30 days.

A woman walks in with a stern look on her face. She pulls out a piece of your jewelry. You recognize it as a piece you sold more than two years ago. The woman says she wants to return it for a cash refund.

When you point to the sign on the wall stating your store policy, she becomes agitated. And when you note that she kept the item for two years, she says that she had only now returned to the town for a summer vacation.

She insists on a refund. And, she says, she is not without clout. Her family has vacationed in this town for many years. If word gets out that she is dissatisfied with your work, your business will suffer, she says.
