Additional Information

Minimal entry requirements include some vocational courses and strong mechanical aptitudes. But there is no set educational path into the fire protection industry.

Several community colleges in the U.S. offer diplomas in fire protection.

You can also enter the industry through a bachelor in engineering. A handful of American schools actually offer undergraduate and graduate degrees in fire protection engineering.

And graduates of such programs have very good job prospects, says Kathleen Almand. She is the executive director of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers.
