Real-Life Communication
You are a primate researcher. You have just started working at an
institute where five chimpanzees have learned to use sign language. In order
to prepare to work with the other researchers, and to be able to communicate
with the chimps, you will need to brush up on all the data, statistics and
information available about the chimps.
"You need to be able to get
along with others and be able to communicate and work in team situations,"
says Deborah Fouts. She is a primate researcher. "These are often complex
situations, with complex research and data that needs to be observed and recorded."
One
of the chimps at the institute is Washoe. Read the following paragraphs about
her. Then answer a few questions to make sure you have retained the information:
Washoe
Pan Satyrus, commonly known as Washoe, is a chimpanzee that lives at the Chimpanzee
and Human Communication Institute (CHCI).
Born in West Africa, Washoe
was adopted by Beatrix and Allen Gardner on June 21, 1966, and was raised
in their home as if she were a human child. Washoe was the first non-human
to acquire a human language -- American Sign Language.
Washoe moved
with Roger and Deborah Fouts to the University of Oklahoma in 1970 and came
to Central Washington University in 1980. Washoe is the matriarch of the institute
chimps. This means she can be described as maternal in her behavior toward
the other chimps.
She is known for being fair and kind with both chimpanzee
and human companions. Washoe is slow to invest herself, but with time, she
becomes a loyal friend. She has a good sense of humor.
Washoe loves
being outside. She also likes looking at catalogs (especially shoe catalogs)
or books by herself, or signing about pictures with friends. Brushing teeth,
painting, coffee and tea parties, and playing tag through the window also
are favorites.

Questions:
- Where was Washoe born and how did she spend her early childhood?
- How would you describe Washoe's relationship with the other chimps?
- Name three activities that Washoe enjoys.
