Real-Life Math -- Solution

You are on an international team of researchers studying the mountain gorilla. In order to understand metric measurements, you convert them into inches and pounds.

  1. How much do male and female mountain gorillas weigh in pounds?

Males weigh: 140 to 180 kg
    2.2 pounds = 1 kg

    140 kg x 2.2 pounds per kg = 308 pounds
    180 kg x 2.2 = 396 pounds

The males weigh between 308 and 396 pounds.

    Females weigh: 90 kg

    90 kg x 2.2 = 198 pounds

    The females weigh 198 pounds.

  2. How tall are the male and female gorillas in inches?

    39.37 inches = 1 meter
    Male height: 1.7 meters

    1.7 meters x 39.37 inches per meter = 66.93 inches

The males are 66.93 inches tall.

    Female height: 1.5 meters

    1.5 meters x 39.37 = 59.06 inches

The females are 59.06 inches tall.
