Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You do more research on the effect of the oil in the area.

This is the real-life decision that Marion Houlbrook, an environmental scientist, would make. She would do this because the oil tank is near a stream that is an important spawning area for fish.

Oil already in the ground could continue to move towards the stream and affect the fish population. "We are faced with many challenges and have to make tough, quick decisions," says Houlbrook. "Often in a field that has been contaminated, you have to make a decision about whether to continue digging. Do you clean all the soil?"

She says there can be a lot of things to consider when making the decision. "The decision is based on whether you will do harm by digging more, or if there is a benefit in removing all the contaminants."
