Insider Info

Additional Information

"In the basic science that underlines the training in audiology, we have classes in acoustics, in biology, in pharmacology," says Alison Grimes. Grimes is the president of the American Academy of Audiology. "So basic mathematics, basic science is definitely important," she says.

Grimes says that in the United States, students who hope to obtain a degree in audiology need to first obtain a bachelor's degree. "The bachelor's degree can be in a number of different fields," she says. "It could be in psychology, it could be in biology, it could be in speech and hearing science."

Grimes says that students then need to complete a four-year doctoral degree leading to the Au.D. degree, which is the Doctor of Audiology degree.

Extra Requirements

Audiologists may earn other credentials, such as certificates or certifications offered by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and the American Board of Audiology. These credentials usually require completion of an accredited doctor of audiology program and passing an exam. Some employers may require or prefer that candidates have certification or a certificate, and in some states having the credential can help to meet licensure requirements.
