Test pilots plan and conduct flight tests. They not only fly the plane, they also design testing procedures for the aircraft that will help evaluate its structural integrity, performance, handling, reliability and suitability.

These pilots also conduct research evaluation projects and programs. That involves organizing and directing the test, and supervising the flight operations. Then they recommend ways to fix any problems in technical reports.

Test pilots spend much of their time in the cockpit. However, they also spend a considerable amount of time in the office planning, developing and researching test procedures. "We spend a good deal of time in meetings and at safety reviews," says Russ Stewart, a test pilot and instructor in California.
