Real-Life Decision Making

Paleontologists can often find themselves in the spotlight. After all, who doesn't love to hear about dinosaurs? But the key, say experts in the field, is to make sure you are in the spotlight for the right reasons.

You are a paleontologist working on a dig in a remote area of southern Canada, near the U.S. border. The area is famous for producing some of the most complete dinosaur fossils in the world.

You have been digging in an area for more than a year when members of the crew begin to uncover something that appears significant. The bones cover a massive area and indicate an animal at least the size of an elephant.

None of the early bones seems to be of a species that has been identified. You are thrilled at the possibility of revealing a new dinosaur species to the world.

Your crew is already breaking out the champagne bottles. The publicity coordinator is eager to call in the media for their first up-close look. However, you feel there are months of digging still ahead.

Publicity would help you get more funding for your work, but are you ready for it yet? What do you do?
