Real-Life Math

You are a paleontologist. You are leading a fossil dig where 10 bones have been found. The bones have the following weights and measures:

  1. 8.8 ounces, 4.3 inches
  2. 4.4 pounds, 10.2 inches
  3. 3.7 pounds, 5.5 inches
  4. 19.8 pounds, 61 inches
  5. 15.4 pounds, 82.7 inches
  6. 7.8 ounces, 5.5 inches
  7. 15.9 ounces, 8.6 inches
  8. 11.9 ounces, 4.7 inches
  9. 5.5 pounds, 4.7 inches
  10. 9.9 pounds, 68.9 inches

You are preparing to begin a fossil record of this creature. You know the following as well:

  • The bones that weigh 9 ounces per inch or more are probably leg bones
  • Bones that weigh 2.7 ounces or less per inch are head bones
  • Bones that weigh between 2.8 and 8.9 ounces per inch are arm or torso bones

Using that information, decide which of the 3 categories each of the 10 bones you found should fall into.
